Featured Staff – Grant Hunter

Grant Hunter was born at North Kansas City Hospital to Ed and Kathy Hunter. He grew up in Excelsior Springs with his younger sister, Kari. Grant was lucky growing up and was able to travel with his parents. Every year for years, they would leave on Christmas Day and drive to Colorado. They spent the week between Christmas and New Year’s skiing. He’s been to Florida multiple times, Cabo, Cancun, as well as two Caribbean cruises. His father and him went fishing twice in Canada.
Grant started swimming competitively at the age of six. He continued doing so until he was eighteen. He wasn’t really a fan of school but he wanted to play sports, so it was a necessary evil. He played baseball in high school. Grant graduated in 2002 from Excelsior Springs High School.
When Grant was 21, he became very sick. After a month in the hospital, his father got frustrated and started researching illnesses himself. He asked the doctor to test Grant for Lupus. The doctor scoffed and said there was no way he had lupus. Ed requested that he be tested anyway. Reluctantly, the doctor did and it came back positive. He spent three more months in a hospital. He then was on dialysis for a year before receiving a kidney transplant. His donor was his dad.
In September of 2011, Grant was in a wedding of a good friend. The bride was a good friend of Amalia (AJ). They knew of each other but met for the first time at the wedding. They hit it off and went to a Royals game together later that week. A year or so later, they got married. They lived in Holt, MO, at that time. They eventually moved to Kearney. They have three lovely children, Lilly, Macie and Jaxon.
Grant spent six years working in sales for Verizon before going to work at TDR. He worked there for six years doing various jobs. He even started his own side business detailing automobiles.
Amalia told Grant that the position of Asst. Dietary Supervisor was open here at Westbrook. He decided to apply. Obviously, he was hired and started working here three weeks ago.
He says that his favorite things about working at Westbrook include;
1. Being able to spend more time with his wife.
2. The environment. Everybody is friendly and easy to get along with.
3. The appreciation. He says he’s been shown more appreciation in the past three weeks than in the entire six years at his previous job.
Grant is super proud of his kids and loves being a dad. His lupus is currently in remission and Grant is looking forward to working here alongside of Amalia.
